Well, it's done *sigh*. This would not be possible without Maggie’s help who, in addition to getting the Compendium published, proof read the pamphlet and corrected numerous errors.

I’m putting a finishing touches on it and will have it available on 16-June. It will be available in 2 formats: 1) Folded and cut into pamphlet form and 2) uncut with crop marks for easy reproduction and is coming to a Train Station near you.

Here’s the deal. Starting on 16-June I will be traveling from San Francisco to Seattle by way of Bakersfield and San Diego (Trains 718, 763, 14 and connecting buses). So, if you would like a copy send me a PM and I’ll arrange to drop copies off. With the exception of, Emeryville (2 stops), San Diego, L. A. (2 stops), San Jose, Oakland, Portland, and Seattle I’ll just have enough time to pop out of the door and hand you copies. I will be making final arrangements on the morning of the 16th.

There is no cost, although, an occasional soda would be nice. Have you seen the cost of things on AmTrak?

The original is in the British Library and can be viewed at: http://special-1.bl.uk/treasures/festivalbooks/pageview.aspx?strFest=0235&strPage=1 .

Yes they did append random e’s to a lot of words and also had a habit of switching “v”’s and “u”’s

"Fairy Catching"- Overdone gig, or still useable?

I had a neat idea for a "fairy catching" gig/ prop while I was in the shower earlier, but I wanted some opinions on whether or not it's been overplayed, or if someone else has the market cornered.

(And no, I wouldn't be catching or even know about the Fantastikals or the Godmothers, because I wouldn't be able to see them.)

Thoughts? Thrown veggies?

SPORRAN WEARERS MAY NEED LICENCE

I found this on a forum I follow; File this under "whut da f**k!!"

SPORRAN WEARERS MAY NEED LICENCE

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6234290.stm

The laws are designed to protect endangered species like otters, whose fur used to be favoured by sporran makers. The legislation applies to animals killed after 1994. Applicants must prove that the animal was killed lawfully before they will be able to get a licence. The conservation regulations were designed to close a number of loopholes and bring Scotland into line with other EU members. The law already applied to other vulnerable animals like badgers, deer, wildcats, hedgehogs, bats, lynx, moles, seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises. The regulations require anyone who owns any part of a protected animal to obtain a licence. The maximum penalties for breaking the law are a fine of £5,000 and six months in prison.

I have to quote one of the other forum members here:

"Personally, I'd not like to be the person in charge of telling some burly competitor in the highland games he must relinquish his sporran. Life's too short to spend that much of it in intensive care."

So, I've finally got the courage to post this. My name is Robin, and I am a Cuthie. I'm also the head kid wrangler, and the caligrapher for the Children's Knighting at faire. I am going to make my first really truly stand-up comedy debut on the stage of the Hollywood
Improv. I don't know how much you know about stand-up, but this is
like telling an athelete that their first official meet is at the
Olympics. I don't know the exact date yet, but it will be a Sunday
afternoon(THANK GOD!!!!!!!! Smaller audiences)I would like to get as
many people from faire in the audience as possible. At least I would
know there were some friendly type people out there. There is a cover
charge, and a 2 drink minimum, but if enough people commit, I might be
ablt to do something about the cover charge. Anyway, even if you
can't make it, keep your fingers, toes, and eyes crossed (except when
you're driving), because I can use all the help I can get....I am
sooooo nervous! Thanks, Robin

Boggards at NorCal Faire UPDATE!

The Award Winning, World Famous Poxy Boggards have been moved onto the Romany Camp stage!!!

Why is this so exciting that I'd use THREE exclamation points to announce it? It's a bigger and better stage, it's the same stage the Internationally Famed Merry Wives of Windsor are performing on, and we can do our NC17 material on it!

Our show times will be changing, but we're not sure when they are, quite yet. It will still be three shows with the following possible schedules:

11:30, 1:30 and 3:30
or
12;00, 2:00 and 4:00

As things get locked down, we'll pass along the information!

OK, pure unfettered and unpaid adulation here.

I've had a chance to sample the wares from Lady Rowley's, the chocolatier stepping in to take the place of our lamentably departed prior chocolate source.

It's VERY good. I think my favorite so far are the dark chocolate truffles - there's a touch of cinnamon (I think) in the outer layer, and the combination is pretty durned intense.

It's going to be a good year :^)

Agoura Reunion THIS Sunday ! ! !

(note: this is a 'copy and paste' of what I posted on the Friends Of Faire website --- AND I plan on 'following the good Dr.' and doing some of my own Magic)

Reunion At Paramount Ranch in Agoura... where this all got its start !
Name: Matt "Wiggins Biggins" Savin
Date Posted: Mar 12, 07 - 7:21 AM
Email: mrsavin6996@aol.com
Message: Dear Goode Faire Folke:

I just received this message (which I am editing down for length... it included directions and more details about those who have passed away... please contact me if you would like to see the 'full text' version, or have any questions about it).

While I truly wish to be at the SFD on this day, and both attend classes AND work Construction... well, this being the 45th anniversary, and an opportunity to see Billy again (I used to work with both he and J.Paul at 1520 A.D., and was the original Fire Eater in Agoura), well... it is a difficult choice to make, but I know OUR Faire will continue, while THIS is a rarer occurance...and maybe a last chance in too many ways, sadly.

Please do pass this info along to anyone else that you think might be interested, too !

Here is what the message said, in the main:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The Friends of Paramount Ranch Proudly Present
The Ninth Annual Agoura Renaissance Faire Reunion

'Sempre ubi, sub ubi (always wear underwear)' - motto of the Guild of St Helena's, peasants -

Sun's Day, Spring Equinox, March 18, 2007,
Noonish to 6PM

Bring viands and repasting for yourself and friends, blankets for the greensward, offspring, tales of adventure and romance, costumery, songs and drums and instruments of music, boxes containing tiny Flemish painters - come join us under the Oaks as we once again recall, celebrate, and otherwise remember our times at the Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faire in
Agoura...

Come and be warmed by the sunny memories of a simpler time, back in Agoura, when Faire was perfect. As in years past, you are invited to put on your Faire clothes (or what of them is left), and come out to the old Hallowed Ground once more.

Bring your pictures, if'n you are of a mind; bring instruments, food, friends, children; bring folk who never did Faire there but always wondered about the place; most importantly, bring that essential Faire sizzle that lives in your memory, that special frisson that could only come from a day under the hot Agoura Sun with twenty-five thousand of your closest friends...

So far, i have this to report: Billy Scudder will be coming into town for his mother's 94th birthday (many bright blessings to them both), and he plans to be with us for the ReUnion. He has also agreed to be Pope
this year, and lead the memorial on the Hill.

I've sent word to the Hobby Horse folk, and gotten a positive response. There is talk of a parade... Even now, our plan for the event is still crystallizing, so if you want to put some of your own spin on things, please let us know (contact information is at the end of the e/mail); or better yet, just come to the Reunion and let fly...
* * *
Help Us Circulate this Flyer

If you think this is a worthwhile endeavour, please pass this flyer along to folk on your own e/mail lists. Forwards, in this case, are good.

We would especially like news of the Reunion to go to the Performers' list, Guild lists, booth owner lists, Friends of Faire, or any interested folk that you would like to include.
* * *
J. Paul Moore Says,'If you are up for it, bring a kite of some sort and we will fill the air above Procession Hill with color!' Also, after much pleading and cajoling, the aforementioned Doctor
Moore has agreed to do some (performance) magic on our stage in Witch's Wood (or more accurately, where the stage used to be). He will be on at 1:30, and
we would welcome anyone else who would dare follow him. * * *

What Do We Need?
All manner of things; your good will and your Vision, your desire to relive and recreate and pass along the magic...And, there are practical considerations as well; even though(through the good graces of our friends at the National Park Service) we are not required to have a permit this year, and we will be using the elegant flush privies in Western Town instead of the usual Gump, a donation to help
cover our other expenses would be much appreciated.

The Friends of Paramount Ranch would use any extra funds we receive for the benefit of the site; we will be having a Medea Creek cleanup day sometime after Southern Faire, and there are other projects on the
horizon. * * *

We have lost a number of comrades over the years, and in their honour we will be holding our traditional memorial ceremony at 4pm on Procession Hill.

In light of the above, here are some words from Cat Taylor, Director of Entertainment for the Dickens Christmas Fair : 'For those of you who weren't blessed by working or attending the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Agoura, it was a beautiful and special place. Every year there is a reunion there, which unfortunately for yours truly (who is also a Celtic fiddler) coincides with St. Patrick's Day weekend, so I have been unable to attend.

'This year there will be two special remembrances for Agoura faire folk who have passed in the last few months, Manny Suarez and Charles Taylor.'Manny Suarez of Quail Inn made churros, artichokes, and quail and some truly wonderful breakfasts at both
Renaissance Faires and Dickens Fairs. Charles Taylor was a founding member of the Sea Dogs.'

Portions of both Manny's and Charles' ashes will be scattered in memorial to them, and their love for this hallowed ground.
* * *
Many thanks for your past participation and your good wishes - we hope to see you at the Reunion.

Fare Ye Well,

For The Friends of Paramount Ranch

################################################

Regardless of how YOU spend that day, may it be Faire Ever Glorious !

With Love,
Matt

Another of our family has fallen...

Below is a posting made by Haggis on the FoF website. I found out from Chastity this morning from a bulletin posted and by her call this evening. He will be sorely missed!

Chew Toy aka Brandi

Those who knew him, and even those who heard of him...
Big Mike passed away last night.

He leaves an incredibly (RIDICULOUSLY) huge circle of friends, as well as his sons;

We are asking for donations to take care of services in this time of need by way of a paypal account.

If you have one (or if you don't, please sign up), log on to paypal, and send payment to junkmall@gothicweb.org

This is set up by Corey, who is a fellow MacDaddy, carries the Haggis seal of approval, and is usually found at Fellowship Foundry.

Please pass this on to ANYBODY who would be interested.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Queen's dress stolen

Help! My San Francisco garage was ransacked Saturday night, November 18. Thieves stole the beautiful Queen's dress I've worn at Folsom Faire, The Revels and at Valhalla; to be more precise, they took the bodice, sleeves and overskirt.

Designed and made by Liz Martin, this unique purple (okay, aubergine) velvet confection—beaded and pearled to within an inch of its life by the fabulous women of St. Matthews Guild—weighs at least 30 pounds.

Pictures here: www.folsomfaire.com/StMPhoto...F05Q1.htm

The SFPD is looking for it. The officers who took the report say it's likely to turn up since it's so unusual; one of the officers is a Faire fan and even asked about Dickens.

As you shop Bay Area costume and thrift shops for your pleasure this season, please keep an eye out for the dress. It's tough to miss.
(Yes, we've had security issues before. I was taking the dress up to my Dad's for safekeeping at Thanksgiving. Sigh.)
Generous reward offered.

Please spread the word.

Thanks so much.

Description Of Elizabethan England

In searching for something else I ran across “Description Of Elizabethan England“ by William Harrison <http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1577harrison-england.html>.

As it was published in 1577 I think it is fairly accurate. The chapters are:

Chapter I: Of Degrees Of People In The Commonwealth Of Elizabethan England
Chapter II: Of Cities And Towns In England
Chapter III: Of Gardens And Orchards
Chapter IV: Of Fairs And Markets
Chapter V: Of The Ancient And Present Estate Of The Church Of England
Chapter VI: Of The Food And Diet Of The English
Chapter VII: Of Our Apparel And Attire
Chapter VIII: Of The Manner Of Building And Furniture Of Our Houses
Chapter IX: Of Provision Made For The Poor
Chapter X: Of The Air And Soil And Commodities Of This Island
Chapter XI: Of Sundry Minerals And Metals
Chapter XII: Of Cattle Kept For Profit
Chapter XIII: Of Wild And Tame Fowls
Chapter XIV: Of Savage Beasts And Vermin
Chapter XV: Of Our English Dogs And Their Qualities
Chapter XVI: Of The Navy Of England
Chapter XVII: Of Sundry Kinds Of Punishment Appointed For Offenders
Chapter XVIII: Of Universities

The first chapter starts “We in England, divide our people commonly into four sorts, as gentlemen, citizens or burgesses, yeomen, and artificers or labourers. Of gentlemen the first and chief (next the king) be the prince, dukes, marquesses, earls, viscounts, and barons; and these are called gentlemen of the greater sort, or (as our common usage of speech is) lords and noblemen: and next unto them be knights, esquires, and, last of all, they that are simply called gentlemen. So that in effect our gentlemen are divided into their conditions, whereof in this chapter I will make particular rehearsal.”

I think folks will find it interesting reading.

She's a pretty petite gal, so at least it cuts down on the amount of raw materials required. She'd love to get it done in leather (or a good facimile) so if you or anyone you know could do this, I'd love to put you in contact ASAP.

Hi.

I was wondering if anyone here was from the Mich. Renfest in Holly?

Also if you are, have you heard of any changes this year?

I know a couple of merchants are not returning.

Any info is appreciated. I am about to purchase my season pass and want to make sure its worth it.

Thanks

Auditions & Registration Changes at Southern (cross-posted)

***If you are NEW to the faire or want to be a THEME CHARACTER:

Sat. Feb. 11 - Orientation Meeting
This is orientation day, for apprentices only. Newbies, are to bring a completed Registration Form found on the REC web page. Even people wanting to join guilds that do not audition should be at this meeting. There will be a faire orientation meeting, recruitment presentations by each guild, followed by a meet-and-greet with the various guildmasters.

While guildmaster's are welcome to bring a couple of cast members for the sake of a presentation, it is not an all cast meeting. People who want attend so they can visit with old friends should not be there. The only legitimate purpose at this function is recruitment. Later in the day there will be a guildmaster's meeting for GM's only.

Sun. Feb. 12 - Auditions
Only guildmasters and directors, and people looking to join guilds or audition for theme character parts should be in attendance. We're going to be seeing individual performers one-on-one, and only the people making actual casting decisions should be there. It's intimidating enough to be called upon to strut your stuff in front of judges without adding more people to the panel.

In brief: Only newbies, and people wishing to be theme characters are to be at the February meeting, location to be determined (check the website for updates). All returning cast are to wait until March.

***If you are a RETURNING performer:

March 11th - All cast meeting on the faire site followed by abbreviated orientation and auditions for people who missed out on the February thing and also for people looking to switch guilds. And of course, there will be classes. Please bring your completed registration form so you can exchange it for a reckoning card. Nothing really changes for the oldtimers except filling out the reg form at home.

REC Web Page: Registration forms, audition location info, class requirements, etc. here…
www.renfair.com/socal/part...nt/rapa.php

Why the February auditions?
It gives directors more time to work with their new people, since apprentices are the ones who have the most classes, and therefore are less available to do any rehearsal during workshops. I can't tell you how hard it is to train a newbie for a stage show with the few hours I get with them doing workshops. This also affords the apprentices more time to get their costumes together. Same goes for theme characters.

Go forth and tell your friends and neighbours about the earlier auditions.

Taming of the Shrew Goes South (maybe)!

Hi all. My name is Sandey Grinn and my company has been performing a comedia version of "Taming of the Shrew" at the De Fruitta faire these last two years (before that at Santa Barbara...before that some of us were in other shows like "Salami der Amore", "Booma Boomba", "Cock and Feathers", etc.). We're discussing bringing it to the attention of the SoFaire folk (who ever they may be!) and regardless, plan to form a local theatre group as well as hopefully do De Fruitta again. No matter where we play next though, we already know that we're going to be recasting two of the parts, Kate and Columbina (servant who doubles as the bards widow character). We're looking for two actresses experienced in both Shakespeare and Comedia (the show combines both). There will real pay for any show we do (otherwise none of us can afford to do it!), so if any of you might be interested in auditioning for us (or knows someone you think might be perfect), please respond here or drop me a message. We haven't set a date for auditions yet; right now we're just starting to gather names and contact info. Happy 2006, Sandey

New RPFS specific Tribe formed

Hey everyone...

With sublime timing given the impending fire-up of the RPFS season, Jose has recently formed an RPFS specific moderated tribe for those who perform at or are otherwise connected to RPFS. It's not an official REC organ in any way/shape/form, but it'll be a good place to connect and communicate.

If'n you're interested, check it out at tribes.tribe.net/rpfstribe

Where has everyone been hiding lately? There's been no postings or anything on this Tribe for the past two months...

I know y'all are still out there... 'cuz I run into y'all at "small-Faires" & other such events.

Let's sound off & let people know what we're doing - gatherings & social occassions at other events... etc... etc..

I was just at the RenFaire at Balboa Park in San Diego this past weekend... I'm probably going to be driving up to the Faire at Big Bear City for a day next weekend... followed by a weekend in Corona at the end of the month for their first "Pirate Faire"

After that... who knows! Hope to see some of my friends from Southern Faire out there... and if you're not my friend (yet) ... c'mon - you know you wanna be my friend! Come on up & say "Howdy!"

Nor Cal Ren Faire
and probably a few others I don't know about.

We've got so many people distributed over so many tribes. Why don't we all pick one and stick with it so everyone can be in on the same conversations at the same time? Given, there are a few tribes for people with very specific faire interests (Pubs and Alestands, Boothies, Dark garden Windows, HOTF Costumes, etc.) but for the general community, doesn't it make sense to gather in one place. We've had discussions about creating cohesion. Let's start here.

HISTORY: Originating in Germany, the dusack was created in the 16th century
as a training weapon for single edged swords, primarily the messer. It is a
short one handed weapon, designed principally for cutting. The dusack was
incorporated into the curriculum of 16th century German fencing and spread
even further in the 17th century, becoming a primary choice for many Germans
in tournaments and for sport.

WORKSHOP: This seminar will begin by covering the history of the dusack,
looking at the transition of training from messer to dusack as well as
examining the changes in the design of the dusack. Next, we will go into a
detailed look at the masters that incorporated the dusack in their
treatises. We will then learn the stance and how to hold the weapon,
followed by a comprehension of the body mechanics for the movement and
footwork of the dusack. We will start working on offensive actions by
studying the cuts in great detail before incorporating them into the theory
of dusack fencing by applying it in practical exercises.

Once there is a basic understanding of the strategy and theory, we will
study the guards and how use them in practical exercises to create an
opening. Finally we will learn disarms and grapples. The seminar will
culminate in the students getting an opportunity to use what they have
learned in supervised bouts.

The equipment need for the seminar will be a fencing jacket (or equivalent
protection), a fencing mask or helmet with face protection, heavy gloves
(welding gloves work well), forearm protection as well as elbow protection,
and groin/chest protection (male/female respectively). Some weapons will be
available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. There are
several stores online that they are available from such as
http://www.newstirlingarms.com and
http://www.historicalfencing.org/Macdonaldarmory/forsale.htm

RPFS: RUB (Random Undisclosed Benefactor)

Yes we are doing RUB at Southern Faire again this year!

For thems of you what's new: RUB (Random Undisclosed Benefactor) is a faire wide Secret Santa game. One the 1st weekend of faire you get assigned to someone, and you anonymously send that person gifts once a weekend for the run of faire. Meanwhile some secret person is sending you a gift. The gifts are to cost no more than $15, and they can be anything, the more creative the better. On the last weekend of faire you introduce yourselves.

If you flake out on your gift giving duties, and I find out, I'll take you out of the game.

Write me on Tribe, or at mongerweb@yahoo.com if you want to be involved. To sign up I need your real name, your faire name, and your faire affiliation (i.e. St. Ives, or Toad in the Hole, etc.). You can also sign-up in person, if you see me at faire. Don't post your sign-up here, though.

Thanks!
-Diana
These jobs are Faire game for the eager
Renaissance jobs are Faire game for some
By Lafayette C. Hight Jr.
Staff Writer

Saturday, March 26, 2005 - 'Twas beauteous, the merry occasion yesterday morn', when gents and mistresses from across this land didst seek to ply a trade at Her Majesty's faire.

With the opening day of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire and Artisans Market less than three weeks away, Sunday's official job "faire' drew many to the Santa Fe Dam to apply for positions in entertainment, sales and concessions.

Lisa Stehl, concession coordinator, estimated that 1,000 people would be hired for such positions as security, retail, office, grounds crew, guest services and craft areas.

Eddie Ebinger, 45, of West Covina had his heart set on becoming a knight.

"They won't let me joust,' he said after being informed that an outside company does the horseback activities.

But working in the folklore and superstition category seemed appealing to him. Ebinger is long- haired, bearded and mustachioed.

"People have been calling me wizard all of my life,' he said.

Amid a flurry of carpenters buildings booths and workers raising tents, digging trenches and planning logistics for the 43rd annual Faire, new employees, alumni and hopefuls went through the required classes for Faire employment.

Michael Robles, 24, and Cassie Townsend, 28, both of Valley Village, attended a language workshop to brush up on their Elizabethan English.

"It will be difficult,' Robles said. "We're used to speaking slang all day and all night. We're learning English all over again.'

Robles will play a peasant/monger every weekend during the six- week run.

"They sell items that really nobody wants,' Robles said.

He will carry a handful of rotten sausage and a cow's tongue and, in jest, attempt to sell them to patrons.

Townsend will play a May reueller and serve the May queen, the fertile virgin who will lead the maypole dance.

"(The May reueller) is like the cheerleader best friend of the Queen of the May,' she said.

Additional workshops included costuming, song, dance and other performance acts.

Stehl said positions may still exist and "people can come in on weekends before the Faire and inquire about jobs if they miss this job fair.'

The Renaissance Faire has a six-weekend run, Saturdays and Sundays from April 16 to May 22. The Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area is located at 15501 E. Arrow Hwy. in Irwindale. For information visit www.RenFair.com .

...where is everyone?? C'mon... let's breathe some life into this place!

Just as a quick into (for those of y'all who don't know me) - I've been working at Southern Faire for the past five years & it's become a wonderful part of my life.

Y'all may recognize me as that asian-guy who marches around in the parade dressed in red & carrying a 14-ft pike. Odds are y'all have seen me... (I don't EXACTLY blend in with the crowd out there)

Who's going to be at the Faire in Vegas this upcoming weekend? ...Great Western War? ...dorking around at home??
